Kaplan Turbine is a paddle-type turbine with a variable profile fan. It was developed by the Austrian professor Viktor Kaplan in 1913 and combines a self-adjusting propeller blade with an automatically adjustable guide vane to achieve high productivity at large drop flows and gaps in head height.
Kaplan turbine evolved from the Francis turbine. His invention was applied to a hydropower station with a very low head height, and it can generate electricity efficiently. Kaplan turbine is now widely used in high-flow, low-head hydroelectric power plants.
