The Kaplan Turbine is an axial flow reaction turbine with adjustable vanes. This turbine combines self-adjusting propeller blades with self-adjusting diversion gates for efficiency over a wide range of water flow and water levels.
The Kaplan Turbine, also known as the propeller turbine, was developed from the Francis turbine. It works very efficiently at low heads and high flow rates. The reaction of the Kaplan Turbine leaving the water is used to turn the wheel of the Kaplan turbine. When water flows through the blades, lift is generated in the opposite direction of the exiting water and the lift causes the blades to rotate.
