Problem: The power plant dam has huge sediment content and the original turbine design was not suitable for the plant. Thus the erosion on runner and on other flow surface was serious. The lower anti-wear, stainless steel, plate lap was worn throughout, the leakage increased since the severe erosion on the runner blade and other passage parts; operation went ineffective, seriously affecting the normal output; the turbine needed to be frequently overhauled.

Solution: With the assistance of CFD computer dynamic flow simulation technology, the power plant working conditions were analyzed and a high-efficiency runner was selected; reaching an excellent hydraulic performance. Besides, we carried out an anti-sand abrasion modification of the overall structure of the distributor system.
The unit’s output increased from the original 8.334 MW to 9.2 MW. The rated operating point efficiency is now above 90%, and the highest efficiency can reach to 92.5%.
